School of Medicine

Established: 1927

The title of the chief official for the School of Medicine has evolved over the years. Originally, leadership for the Duke School of Medicine and Duke Hospital was overseen by one position. As Duke Health expanded, an additional leadership position was created in 1999 to divide responsibilities for the Health System and the School of Medicine. Upon the retirement of A. Eugene Washington in 2023, the leadership structure was changed to dual leadership model with a Chief Executive Officer and a Chief Academic Officer for Duke Health.
